Just Opened: The Still

1 Levee Way Newport, KY
859-581-6700

You may have heard The Still is the new joint in the former J-Hall spot. You may have read (in the Enquirer’s First Look) that The Still is “The newest restaurant/bar at Newport on the Levee, featuring beautiful skyline views, an upscale bar menu and over 50 kinds of bourbon.” While that is true, it is far from accurate. Here is the rest of the story.
For those that don’t know, The Still is the new sister club to Cincy’s biggest rock bar. Westside’s rock bar king, the Pirate’s Den has been one of, if not the King of rock clubs anywhere in the city. Crowds strain the limits of the Den’s 600 person capacity every weekend to see the best bands the city has to offer. Ever expanding and always popular, the Den is one of the largest and most frequented live stage bars in Cincy, or NKY. The Still is a new addition to the Den’s winning concept. Same owner and the same vibe.
True, The Still has an uber-fresh makeover, spectacular views and a bonafide madman chef. Chef Vitor Abreu was given full authority in the kitchen and proceeded to fire up flavors that simply kick the sh!t out of any “bar” food you’ll find. No kidding.
True, The Still has an impressive menu and an impressive batch of bottles behind the bar to match. Ridiculously fine craft high end bourbon from the best casks in the world sit pretty side by side, proudly wearing their coveted labels.
Yes, The Still is “the newest restaurant/bar at Newport on the Levee, featuring beautiful skyline views, an upscale bar menu and over 50 kinds of bourbon.”. But that’s not the soul of the new club, mearly it’s chic attire. The Still shines bright because it’s born of the same rebellious blood of its rock & roll sibling. 90,000 screaming watts of decadent dance & rock that shakes the stage and keeps the dance floor sweaty. Deep seas of sweet & sexy, singing along, shakin’ & breakin” to the music. The most entertaining (and expensive) band’s from Cincy, Columbus, Chicago, Nashville and wherever the hell they need to bring them in from. The freshest new dance music from DJ’s who know what’s going on. Fact is, The Still is all about the PARTY.
That’s what put the Den on the Cincy Bar Legend’s list. That’s what The Still is bringing to the Levy. Sure, you can slide into a seat, bite into beautiful burgers that look way more New York than Newport. Sink into a sinfully satisfying steak that sneers at Ruth’s Chris. Or tackle a quartet of tacos that can go toe to toe with any and tromp all over most. Feast on fine flatbreads, or dig into truly gourmet dogs in many unique combinations. But make no mistake while you ooh and ahh over your meal, this is a club. A big fat draft and a big loud band is still par for the course here. Hot wings & cold beer, hot chics and cool music are staples at The Still. Just like it’s older sister the Den, The Still is a party bar. The menu may be more in touch with the urban professional foodies, but the nightlife is still fueled by it’s rock & roll bloodline. People on both sides of the river will feel its pulse, and its soulshine may shine so bright it might even cast a shadow all the way over the Banks.
Owner Larry Hemsath is at this very moment melting his phone booking an impressive band list. Truckin’ in talent from far and wide. He’s no stranger to scouting terrific talent. I snapped this photo of the new country band sensation Conner Christian & Southern Gothic on the Still’s stage. This national act’s tune “Sheets Down” sky rocketed to #1 on the CMT Pure 12 Pack Countdown. Their recent release “New Hometown” topped CMT and Billboard charts, earned praise from music reviewers nation wide and fueled their current tour across the country. One stop along the way from NY to TN was The Still. That’s the kind of talent this club is delivering. You didn’t see the hottest up & coming country act in the U.S. at Madison Theater, Thompson House or even Bogarts. The Still snagged them first, and Larry is just getting started. Expect to see a live music schedule here that will rival any club in CIncy, and many larger venues as well. Expect to see the best.
So you see, the impression that The Still is Newport’s new fine food & spirit bar & restaurant is true, but hardly an accurate description. We knew inquiring minds would want to know there is much more to the story. The Enquirer may lead the way in local news. But they need to re-think the way they dish the dope on local nightlife, if they want to get it right. Or perhaps just leave the biz of local club dope dishing to someone who can pull it off proper. That’s the voodoo we do best.
We don’t do articles on news (it’s just too damn boring), nor politics (it’s all lies, Rep. or Dem. so why bother), nor silly street car reports (waste tens of millions to get people already downtown 3 miles to another side of downtown... Dumb). That jibberish is meaningless to us, and far from worth wasting page space on. We do food, music and fun. That’s all we ever did and all we ever will. If we say The Still, is the coolest new music & dining destination, you should believe it.
