Stagger Lee

We’ve seen the name Stagger Lee scattered across our band guide since we first started back in 05’. Truth is they have been takin’ the stage since 1981! It’s safe to say Stagger Lee is one of the most booked bands in the city, let alone one of the most booked country bands. In fact, they won Cammy Award’s “Best Band in Cincinnati” for two consecutive years.
If you see the band live you’ll understand why. This isn’t some flash in the pan local country-pop band (thank God, we’ve seen too many of those lately). This is stone cold solid musicianship coupled with seasoned pro performances. Stagger Lee does indeed play your dad’s favorite country legend hits but they are far from dated. That’s due to Stagger Lee’s cool twists and turns throughout the show. Imagine Merle Haggard, Jimi Hendrix, Jon Bonham and Johnny Cash all in one band and your getting the jist of it.

While none of Stagger Lee’s band member’s names sound nearly as familiar as those, their collective sound is something you will remember. Founding member Bobby Joe Mueller (Lead vocals, harmonica, guitar and harmonies) has talents galore. He leads the band with a cool confidant “Texas swagger” and could cover any country legend with ease and authority. You can almost hear the “mud the blood and the beer” in his voice. Bobby may be from north of the Mason-Dixon Line but he’s got “Good Ole Boy” written all over him. New York native KJ Summerville (Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar and Harmonies) joined Stagger Lee in 94’ He may hail from the epitome of Yankee but he’s no yank. When you see KJ pickin’ & grinnin’ you’d think he just left the Charlie Daniels Band. You’d better believe he could fit right in that band too. KJ has a wild streak running through his veins though, it’s not all 3 cord melody country bars beltin’ out his speakers folks... this guy can flat out rock... and often does (check out the Little Wing video on the band’s myspace). , Kenny Holycross JR (Lead vocals, drums and harmonies) may sit back in the cheap seats like all drummers but you’ll strain to take notice when he starts singing. Aside from being a solid pro drummer Kenny can wail the mic as well as the skins. He’s been playing since age 14. Derek Johnson (Lead vocals, bass guitar and harmonies) started with the Goads right out of high school. He spent 15 years traveling with big entertainment names such as Amy Grant and Pat Boone. Aside from being a seasoned session player (Bass and guitar) he kicks ass strokin’ his beauty of a bass in Stagger Lee.

Altogether these guys make Stagger Lee’s performances a fantastic ride. They take you on a tour from old school Merle Haggard country, to rowdy Hank Williams Jr. rockin country, to Zac Brown modern country. Along the way they push the pedal and throw a few rock tunes at you just to keep the action hot.
The band also has put out original work but we haven’t snagged a CD yet. When we get one we’ll follow up, if it’s as good as we expect it to be we’ll want to plug the hell out of it for sure. We regret it’s taken us 4 years to do an article on Stagger Lee. We have no excuses and only apologies. Perhaps they slipped our radar because they have been around such a long time their name sounds too familiar to strike cords of “Who the hell is that” in our fuzzy brains. Unknowns often get our attention because we are always looking for that righteous new talent struggling to get in on the scene. Turns out we need to pay more attention to the talent that has stood the test of time and find out why. There more than meets the eye on Stagger Lee’s stage. Don’t let them slip your grasp the next time you see the name on the marquee. Check our band guide for the upcoming shows or go to myspace.com/staggerleerocks. It’s damn good for a myspace, easy to read schedule, a couple of good vids and more.
