Jammin' with Scott Wright

There are countless “one man bands” playing gigs in Cincy. Every decent pub has one. Not to mention duos and trios. If we were to write about them all, we’d need a lot more pages. So, we’re not about to start down that road. However, now and then one comes along that stands out as print worthy. The reason Scott “Barefoot” Wright makes the short list is because unlike the others, he really is a one man “band”.
“Band” refers to a group of musicians playing (typically) a bass, drums, guitar and vocals. A lone guitar is not a band. Scott is alone onstage, playing a guitar and singing. He looks like a solo guitarist. He is, but isn’t. If you couldn’t see Scott, and only heard him, you’d swear it was a full band. Because it is.
The line-up is simple; on keys - Scott Wright, on bass - Scott Wright, on drums - Scott Wright, on lead guitar - Scott Wright, on rhythm guitar - Scott Wright, on lead vocals - Scott Wright, on backing vocals, uh, yep, Scott Wright. Scott has spent weeks, at home in the studio playing and recording the different parts of the songs, on every instrument. He then mixes the individual tracks (leaving out the lead guitar and vocals) to perfection.
During the live show, you hear the entire song with live guitar and vocals mixed over the pre-recorded tracks. It comes together harmoniously. Plus he never has to worry about the keys, bass or drums missing a step, note or key. The end result is far removed from your average Joe Shmoe solo act. It’s a true full band sound.
Stop and think about how much talent it takes to pull that off. In the 6 years CV has been alive there is only one other similar artist we’ve ever seen, OMEB (One Man Electric Band). Omeb does the exact same thing. But the two artists are night and day. Omeb wails wickedly on Ozzy, Metallica and the like. Scott’s flavor is laid back Gulf Coast Tiki Bar. You can hear sample tracks from Jimmy Buffet, Neil Diamond, Keith Urban and Bon Jovi on his site scottwrightonline.com (plus photos, schedule and an interesting bio with tech details of his equipment).
If you’re thinking... “Hey I know that name” it might be because Scott is front man for the band Hollywood. One of the oldest original member A-list band names in Cincy. He’s been making music for a living since the early eighties. He used to love (and still does) the big crowds the full band brings, the 80’s rock mayhem and the thrill of a big show.
But he also loves the beach.
He explained the roots of the solo show. “I would be in Florida or Put In Bay and see these one man show guys and think... really? I can do better than that.” After years of careful consideration. He formulated his plan, started playing and recording and weeks of long hours later, the Barefoot solo show was born.
Jimmy Buffet sang “I got a Caribbean soul I can barley control and some Texas hidden here in my heart.” These days, Jimmy’s an empire executive. He spends more time in air conditioned high rise offices than shoeless on sun swept beaches I guarantee. Barefoot Scotty is still living the true Buffet style and those lyrics suit him like a “Property Of” tattoo across a biker chicks butt. He’s got salt air in his hair, sand in his shoes (that’s why he doesn’t wear any), and he’s not putting on. It’s who he is, it’s what he plays, and it’s where he wants to take you with his music.
Summer is in full swing and if you’re cravin’ a powder beach and Mai Tai but are stuck here in Porkopolis look for Scott’s name in the Band Guide. After a tequila or two, you’ll feel like shedding your shoes and starting a conga line. The vibe is infectious. The music is solid pro.
