Just Opened By: RJ

Lime Taqueria
522 Main St. Covington, KY 41011
859-360-7420

MainStrasse’s latest culinary addition-Lime opened April 11th on Main St. The concept is the burritos-tacos only craze but with chef driven recipes and quality. Gina Puopolo and husband Matthew own and operate the new Lime Taqueria. Matt grows hydro organic tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and cilantro in the basement and Gina uses her extensive culinary education and experience upstairs transforming ultra-fresh ingredients into ultra-tasty tacos & burritos.
At Lime Taqueria the focus is on freshness. Walking in you scan the big blackboard for her offerings and you find burritos ($6.50) there are four options. Jamaican Jerk Chicken with cucumber, watermelon, pickled jalapeno salsa and smoked tomato sour cream. BBQ Pork with pineapple, pickled red onion and Ancho sour cream. Braised Beef with mango pico de gallo and chipotle sour cream. And Black Bean with roasted poblano salsa, ancho spiced tofu with chipotle sour cream. The fish tacos ($7.50) feature spiced tilapia, cabbage, pickled red onion with cilantro cream. Side offerings are chips with salsa, guacamole or queso. Jarrito soft beverages, tea, bottled water and sodas are offered.
My co-reviewer was thrilled to see the black bean tofu burrito on the board and I went with a fish taco (I do love a good fish taco). Seating is limited as the owner’s concept is a “quick in and out” burrito joint. However there is a wonderful sun bathed table sitting on the front patio and lucky for us it was empty. With the warm sun (finally!) greeting us outside we dined al fresco on our tacos and burrito. The tilapia tacos were unique, the crisp cabbage, nearly sweet pickled red onion and cool cilantro crème created a nice balance to the mildly spiced fish. Two soft corn tortillas wrap it up nicely and I can safely say if they weren’t $7.50 I would have ate three more easily.
I stole a few bites of the black bean tofu burrito and would have tried more but the horrified look on my co-reviewer’s face (not to mention her “Well don’t eat it all!” comment left me to savor what little I could get to write about. Silky smooth and multi-layered flavors stood out strong. Not spicy, but spiced. The tofu provided the perfect amount of meatiness and the complex flavors of the herb infused crème really stood out. In short, it kicks the sh!t out of Chipotle (although I must admit I find Chipotle nearly inedible). Don’t take my comparison to the crap Chipotle as a cop out for an “it’s good but not that good” because honestly I really enjoyed the new flavor combinations Lime Taqueria has created.
In all, we both truly enjoyed our selections. The only minor complaint was that at $14 a couple sides of chips or rice included wouldn’t be uncalled for. Nevertheless the fact is with high quality, higher prices follow.
If you looking for something good and creative to fill your belly when in MainStrasse Lime Taqueria will please any burrito lovers palate. There is so much good food in MainStrasse Lime will have to find their niche with the locals to compete with the staples on the street but since the area is chock full of festivals and events, they should do a bang up business on the whole.
Check out the “simple as the food” web site www.limecovington.com better yet, just grab a burrito or taco and snag that singular sunny patio table and see and taste for yourself. You may even get away with sneaking in your own Dos Equis to finish the flavors in style (not that we would ever condone anything illegal). If that requires more nerve than you can muster, go for the Jarrito grapefruit soda, it’s (almost as) good too. Big box burrito joints will never compare.
