La Mexicana
642 Monmouth St.
Newport, KY 859-261-6112

If you dig the gringo style fast food Mexican of Don Pablos and the like don’t bother reading any further. If you feel like smacking Mexicans who serve you canned refried beans, instant msg rice and Taco Bell style tacos we have a treat for you.
The next time you get a craving for some real deal Mexicano park the car on 642 Monmouth St. in front of La Mexicana. Inside you’ll find a quaint family run restaurant and a simple menu that screams Mexico. Forget the Mexican Muzak, don’t bother looking for the big somberos and other fake knick knacks, just look for the amigo on the griddle. He’s making fresh tortillas, sopes, flautas, tortas, gorditas, tamales, tacos and of course burritos and enchiladas. Take one look at the photos. That’s the real deal, pure authentic Mexican. It’s awesome, it’s wholesome and it’s cheap.

Word is this is where top Cincy chef’s go to get their Mexican on. We tried it an we can see why. The menu is simple. Choose your type of tortilla, then the meat. The list is far from normal, asada= seasoned skirt steak, al pastor= seasoned pork shoulder, barbacoa= seasoned chuck steak with guajillo & ancho sauce, birra= guallio sauced goat meat, bistec= seasoned rib eye steak, carnitas= pork in it’s own juice, pollo=chicken in adobo sauce, tripa=tripe, lengua=beef tongue, sesos=beef brain, chorizo= Mexican sausage, milanesa= fried breaded steak. Sound authentic? You better believe it. There is also vegetariano and hongos (seasoned mushrooms) for veggie fare. We went with a vegetarino sopes and gorditas plus a birra taco. The thick tortillas on the sopes are addicting, the toppings are piled high & falling off and the flavor is pure Mexico. The goat meat taco was very much beef like. Great texture with a hint of lamb-like aftertaste, excellent.
Bottom line this place serves it all just like they do in Mexico. Service is personal and genuine. There are several entree dinners aside from the traditional a la carte offerings. Everything here is simple and exceptional. Even the hours are simple too, open daily 10-9.

By far the best mexican in the city. I am so tired of every other mexican joint serving enchilada mush smothered in sauce, burritos you have to eat with a fork and menus that are 6 pages long. I' m not from mexico but I would bet that they don't serve any of that. La mexican has real authentic mexican food. Things I have never heard of like sopas and flautas. Everything was absolutely delicious, it's nice to have a place like this right in covington. I am surprised more places do not offer Read More
