The Flying Pizza

Montgomery is home to the Flying Pizza. A small pizza parlor with a big NY attitude. NY residents are known for their “in your face” attitude. The Flying Pizza is owned and operated by New Yorkers but the only thing in your face there is the pie.
The family made the move from the Big Apple to Ohio back in the 60’s. They came with one mission in mind, present Ohioans with the perfect pie. Starting in Dayton they set up shop as The Flying Pizza. Now they have locations in Columbus and Cincinnati. If you want to taste the real deal NY pie you’ll have to head to 9563 Field Ertel Rd.
Flying Pizza won’t share any secrets as far as what goes into the signature NY crust but they did tell us they have their sausage made special for them and only buy the best ingredients. Whatever the secret is their pies are in a category of their own. The Flying Pizza pie looks much like our own Cincy pies at first glance. Closer examination reveals the traditional ash brown bottom, delicate yet flavorful sauce and unusually it’s 100% greaseless. Seriously no oil at all.
We opted for a medium veggie Neapolitan ($15.95) and loved it. Two pieces later and we were stuffed but still found room to try a slice of the Sicilian pie. It’s thick crust pizza that’s strangely light as air. These folks have the secret crust recipe down brother, that’s a fact. The owners appreciated our enthusiasm for trying new pies and felt a slice of their cheese Sicilian was a must. After tasting the rather plain looking fat Sicilian we were impressed how good it was for “just” a cheese pizza. The owners explained “In NY that’s how you get it... just cheese, when people say I want a slice they mean just cheese, it’s the most popular thing to order.”
Wanna know why? Because that’s all the pie needs. On our next trip we’re ordering NY style, “A slice” Or maybe “A slice and a Brookland” What’s a Brookland? It’s a beer! Flying Pizza serves NY brew to go with their NY pie. “The New Yorkers all come here, they congregate here” the owner explained. Why wouldn’t they? Flying pizza treats their customers much different than your average pizza joint. “We have customers that come in and don’t even have to order, we know how they like their pie and we just start making it when they come in”. Now that’s customer service.
Flying Pizza also serves hot (meatball or steak) Italian sandwiches, plus Calzones. Pies are sold by the slice, 14” and 17” dine in or carry out. The toppings menu is simple: mushrooms, green pepper, black olive, banana pepper and onion are the veggie options. Pepperoni, sausage, ham and homemade meatballs take care of the meat toppings. Pineapple is also used on the Hawaiian. No additives or preservatives are used in anything. Aside from the Brookland brews you can choose from other beers and wine or Pepsi products. They open at 11 am six days a week and close at 8 Monday thru Thursday and at 9 on Friday & Saturday, closed on Sundays.
Authentic NY pizza made with pride by a NY family. Right here in Ohio. Is it great pie? Forget about it!
