Jammin with Flatline

It’s a good thing we’ve hooked up with the Knotty Pine because CV is always on the hunt for great local bands (cover or originals thank you) and the west side rock bar keeps fueling our content with bands from their schedule worth writing about. Last month we featured “Hollywood” and they rocked, this month we feature Flatline.
Unlike Hollywood’s 80’s rock theme Flatline’s groove is in the modern hard rock genre.
The Linkin Park, Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach rock sound is fast becoming the genre of choice by the biggest clubs in town. Surprisingly few bands have really perfected a set list in this genre (the defunct Livid did well, and the new Specyphi tears it up proper too).
The hard edge rock music is where the youth is, so naturally it’s where the decent club pay is too. Let’s face it classic rock appeals to an older crowd and frankly, the 40 year olds just don’t hang out until 2 am and rack up the bar tabs the 20 somethings do. Therefore, they can’t create the sales for the clubs that the younger based bands can. Heavy is where it’s at.

Flatline isn’t made up of a bunch of kids mind you, Ken Crist (vocals), Bob Ernst (guitar), Kenny Brooks (guitar, vocals), Preston Singleton (bass, vocals) and Nick Rennekamp (drums) may be a bit older than many of the head banging fans in the front row. But, part of the success of their show is the youthful enthusiasm they pour into the show. These guys head bang too! And scream their guts out, and shred strings guitar wailing, and splinter sticks drum bashing. Hey, when you’re paid to take the stage to solidly entertain a crowd craving “Stupify” you had best chug a Redbull and reek havoc, otherwise you look like a wannabee poser punk. By the way you can check out Flatline’s Stupify cover on youtube (as well as Sober, Hips & Lips, Whatever, Hand That Feeds, Bad Magik and others).

The bands social sites (myspace.com/flatlinecincinnati and facebook.com/pages/Flatline-Cincinnati) don’t provide readers with music, videos or even a schedule, the link to flatline-music.com is parked. That all sucks but the youtube videos help to make up for it and we have the (Knotty Pine) schedule online. All you hard drinkin’ hard rockin’ metal heads can check out the show and fracture a few neck vertebras on May 13th & 14th. It’s well worth the drive and the measly $3 cover.
