Eastside Vibe Review

The Eastside has been lacking in the Indian food department. For decades all of us Eastsiders who have had a craving for some far east Indian flavors ventured into the city to quench our cravings. You know what that means... locked car doors, suspicious over the shoulder glances, escorting the women to and from the car like a Hollywood movie star and so on. Fact is most suburbanites are used to our safe Eastside neighborhoods and that’s the way we like it. Venturing to the city just to eat is a no no.

It’s sad that the Eastside isn’t the first place new restaurants think of when choosing a location. We have ample space, a high average income and safe shopping areas to open up in. Maybe people still think Eastsiders would rather have corn bread and soup beans than home cooked Indian cuisine... wrong. We love it and some of us even need it.
When I drove by the plaza in Newtown and saw the sign “Indian Oven” I was genuinely excited. First because I crave Indian often and second because Newtown is close to home. Whether you live in Milford (50-Roundbottom) or Anderson (Little Dry Run-Main St.) or even Eastgate (32 all the way) it’s easy to get to the new Indian Oven. The big question is, is it worth a 5-15 minute drive? Definitely.
Walking in the front door the Indian Oven looks much like most Indian restaurants, earthy colors and minimalist decor surrounding a dozen or so tables. No paper napkins, no place mats, just sparkling silverware and bright white linens. The focus is on the food.
After my first lunch buffet trip I was hooked. I ate there 3 more times in the following 15 days. Everytime the buffet was stocked with different items and all were divine. I really like the fact that the chefs mix up the buffet menu. First trip I tried a new dish (to me), Navartan Korma. It’s a savory sauce with chunks of cauliflower, zucchini, carrots and beans. I’ve been pondering going veggie and dishes like this make the idea make sense. Toss in some of their beautiful basmati rice and you have a satisfying meal. My next visit I tried the curry goat, slightly spicy with a rich dark sauce I was glad I’m not veggie yet as this dish was remarkable. I would have never dreamed I’d develop a fondness for goat. Now I look forward to seeing it on the buffet.

The buffet is served from 11-2 and it’s only $6.59. That’s about the same as the crap combo meals they serve down the street at Wendys. I’ll take home cooked Indian (veggie or meat dishes) any day of the week over the gelantious congealed mystery meat by-product they sell over at the drive thru, even if I have to throw in an extra buck or two... any day my friend, any day.
Fact is I gave up fast food altogether. I’m proud I did too. No more upset stomach, no more wondering “is this really chicken” and no more financial support for the awful corporate crap fast food conglomerates. I came out a winner all around. I choose to solely support my local mom & pop establishments when I go out to grab a bite. You should too. You get better health, incomparably better food and better service to go along with it.
Speaking of service I don’t think I have ever met a friendlier bunch of people than the good folks over at Indian Oven. They were genuinely concerned with my satisfaction (and they had no idea I was from EV either). My main man “Tony” greets you at the door with an enthusiastic smile. He maintains your entire dining experience with an eprovescent personality that shines the whole time. I feel much better giving my money to people who appreciate my business. Those fast food jockeys just roboticly hand out bags through the window without a real thanks or a hello. They just expect your business.
Good people, great service and wonderful food. What else does a patron need? Now that the Eastside has Indian Oven my Indian food traveling woes have disappeared. If your in the mood for a quick lunch the buffet will certainly please your palate. If your looking for a unique place to take a date or just want to settle in for some exploratory menu soul searching Indian Oven’s dinner menu (served 5-9:30) will get your juices flowing (and your date’s). With 85 choices on the menu you will satisfy veggie or carnivore guests and you won’t get burned out either. You can print great coupons for Indian Oven at www.eastsidevibe.com from your home or office.
