Eastside Vibe Review

What's Cookin'

Have you heard about “Gravy”? Goshen residents certainly have, and for good reason. The restaurant sits off 28 next to the Unique Boutique. The menu is loaded with wholesome country classics and the prices won’t break anybody’s budget.

Gravy opens daily at 7 a.m. serving piping hot breakfast plates to early risers. It’s worth waking up for I’ll guarantee you that. Walk in on any given morning and you’ll see 6 Breakfast Plates ($5.95) served with taters or grits, 2 eggs, biscuit and gravy. 5 Biscuit Sandwich Plates ($4.95) served up with taters and of course... gravy. There’s also pancakes and omelets. That’s just the beginning.
Lunch diners will be pleased to see no less than 10 Country Sandwich Plates ($4.95-$6.95) all served with fresh cut fries and.... yep, gravy. On the lite side there is also soups, chili, a stuffed tomato salad and a garden salad.

The dinner menu features 10 Supper Plates ($7.95-$11.95). Even grandma would be proud of dishes like the Chicken ‘N Dumplings, Old Time Pit Carved Ham, Mom’s Thanksgiving Casserole, Meatloaf, Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Country Fried Steak. All Supper Plates are served with two sides, biscuit and of course more gravy.
Just what kind of gravy does this place serve up you ask? Well there are seven in all. Sawmill Gravy (a traditional sausage milk gravy), Brown Gravy (a dark, rich beef gravy), White Gravy (a blonde chicken roux gravy), Tomato Gravy (tomato juice thickened with a cowboy roux), Onion Gravy (Vidalia sweet onions with veggie stock and white wine), Gods Gravy (a natural roasted meat juices gravy) and one of my faves, Red Eye Gravy, made from reduced ham goodness with just a touch of coffee. I haven’t seen this on the table since my grandma had kin folk up from West Liberty KY.

There are no less than 16 sides to choose from including fried okra, southern green beans and ham and Ady May’s sweet potato casserole. We really liked the cucumber ‘n onions side. It was fresh and vibrant. A nice break from the norm and quite refreshing. For the grand finale there are always fresh baked desserts to devour if you have room.
Gravy has a great concept, good old fashioned comfort food at comfortable prices. Owner Harvey Gordon is sourcing fresh local produce (in season) and the only sauce he doesn’t make in house is the Old Ray’s Bar-B-Que sauce. That he reserves for the beautiful rack of ribs. These ribs are bone suckin’ finger lickin’ slabs of pork perfection (regardless of what City Beat says!). I usually only go for slow smoked ribs but let me tell ya’ these may be slow roasted ribs but I’ll be damned if they aren’t on par with the best oven baked ribs in town. That’s a fact.

Gravy does a great job combining variety, flavor, portion and price. The owner is a veteran caterer (mypersonalgourmet.com) so he knows his way around a kitchen. He hopes to make Gravy a lively little Goshen eatery. Check out the live Bluegrass on Wednesdays and the new Goshen Idol on may 29th.
